Mentor Texts That Spark Writing: Lessons Integrating Writing, Reading & Grammar Study
$54.59

Finally—a book for classroom teachers and pre-service teachers that integrates reading, writing and grammar instruction…nearly 500 pages of robust writing lesson sequences that feature literature as models for writers in upper elementary, middle and high school. Teachers are often told to incorporate grammar study into the teaching of reading and writing, yet are left to research and plan how to make that kind of coordination happen. In Mentor Texts That Spark Writing, Wolph and Slagle suggest ways to address language and reading standards while reading like writers. They demonstrate how using grammar as a craft of writing can enhance student understanding and performance. ALSO AVAILABLE ON AMAZON.

  • "Music Lessons Given Here"--metaphorically speaking, there is music in the sounds of a city morning, city day, and city night. Figurative language and imagery that appeals especially to the sense of hearing make this a perfect mentor text for student readers and writers of all ages.

  • Relive the joys of popping corn on a Saturday night, then try the family recipes in the back to make your own memories!n text goes here

  • I wish...I wish...young readers will enjoy wishing along with the main character, who imagines all sorts of improvements to his home--a slide to take him quickly from his bed to the breakfast table, a swing for a bed, and so on.

You Have to Teach It Before You Can Test It: Lessons and Resources to Support Growth in Writing
$39.95

In an era when many schools have--by default, perhaps, rather than by design--focused more on preparation for high-stakes on-demand testing than on writing curriculum, there is room for rethinking how and why we use teacher-directed writing in the context of a writing program. If students are to progress as writers, teaching and practice of skills is essential. You Have to Teach It Before You Can Test It provides both the rationale and the means for teachers who are ready to look at student work and provide instruction that is designed to help students lift the quality of what they are composing. Written by veteran teachers with nearly 80 years of experience between them, Wolph and Bernhard explain lesson sequences and strategies that have helped students from upper elementary to middle and high school levels to grow in their confidence and skill as writers. About Jean…

For nearly 25 years I served as the director of the Louisville Writing Project at the University of Louisville, working with K-12 teachers in their classrooms to improve student achievement in writing. For 30 years I've also served as Kentucky Writing Project Director, developing lessons and writing resources.

I believe in modeling for students the strategies we hope they will try in their writing, using mentor texts to inspire both topic selection and craft.
